NewsTop Olympic Oarsman visits Bann Rowing Club
On
Friday 31 March 2006 Sir Matthew Pinsent, winner of four Olympic Gold Medals for
rowing, visited Bann Rowing Club. This was the first time he had been to Coleraine
and he was clearly impressed by the welcome he received. He was greeted by the
Captain of Bann Rowing Club, Mr Keith Leighton, who introduced him to a large
turn out of members and their friends including many members of Coleraine Academical
Institution Boat Club. After posing for dozens of photographs by the river
with many members he went inside the Clubhouse where he gave an inspirational
talk on his rowing career and achievements to all present. A particular highlight
of his visit was his willingness to pass round his medals which for most of those
present was the first time they had seen and touched Olympic Gold. In a
very open, relaxed and informal manner he answered many questions on his training
and racing which delighted everyone. He was a popular and charming speaker who
revelled in the interest shown to him by his audience. The
rowing atmosphere at Bann Rowing Club was boosted tremendously by his presence
and the visit was undoubtedly a major 'feather in the cap' for Bann Rowing Club.
No-one could have failed to have been impressed and inspired by such an imposing
Olympic Champion.
More photographs and autographs followed after he had
been thanked for coming by the Captain, Keith Leighton who presented him with
a cheque for his chosen charity together with a small gift in appreciation of
a most memorable and prestigious visit.
