Achievements
Throughout its long and illustrious history the club has achieved significant success in all of its objectives and continues to do so. The club is currently enjoying a resurgence of success with an extremely active group of young oarsmen and women and a keen group of veterans. We are very proud of our Olympic and international oarsmen Alan Campbell and Richard Chambers in the GB senior squad. Richard’s younger brother Peter is an up and coming athlete who competes on the international rowing stage with the Irish junior squad. The club currently has an active membership of some 40 competitive oarsmen and oarswomen.
Facilities
The club has a good selection of boats with a growing fleet of sculls – some privately owned and a number of pairs, doubles, fours, quads and two eights, the newest of which was recently purchased by the veteran squad. In the past two years the fleet has been added to thanks to the endeavours of club members and friends as well as the generous sponsorship and support of two local businessmen.
Land-based training facilities in the boathouse are basic, with a number of Concept II rowing machines and weight training equipment. In winter we use the nearby St. Joseph’s Secondary School for circuit training.
Rowing
We row on the river Bann along one of the best stretches of rowing water in the British Isles; a stretch of water which is the envy of many other clubs.
At weekends throughout the year, and in the evenings when daylight permits, crews train on the river usually between the boathouse and the Cutts Lock approximately 2.5k upstream and we frequently row a further 8k downstream to the sea.
We compete at many Head of the River Races and Regattas in Ireland and occasionally at events in England and Scotland.
We hold an annual Head of the River Race in Coleraine and a winter Sculling Time Trial each month from October to March and this is a popular and highly beneficial aid to personal development and boating skills.
In recent years, inspired and initiated by the club veterans we have held a sponsored Marathon rowing event when club crews row 26 miles downstream from Newferry to Coleraine.
Coaching
The coaching team is led by chief coach Seamus Reynolds who not only is a very useful oarsman but also is making his mark throughout Ireland as a highly successful coach. The Captain, Keith Leighton, Jeremy Johnston, Geoffrey Bones and Julie Campbell are the other principal members of the coaching team.
