Welcome

Bann Rowing Club was founded in 1842. It is very proud of being Coleraine’s oldest amateur sports club. Based for all of its 166 years on the site of the attractive half-timbered listed building that is the Boathouse at Hanover Place on the east bank of the River Bann near the centre of the town, the Club has a very active membership together with an extensive fleet of
boats to cater for all kinds of competitive and recreational rowing.

Alan Campbell after winning the Diamond Sculls at Henley Royal RegattaThe Club has a distinguished history with many notable successes in Irish rowing and was one of the founding Clubs of the Irish Amateur Rowing Union to which it is still affiliated today.

Rowing in Coleraine is a popular sport and crews and scullers can be seen training and racing on the river all year round. The river is very suitable for rowing at Coleraine except in unfavourable weather conditions and the stretch of river between the Bann Bridge in the centre of the town and Sandelford Bridge further upstream is both popular and well used. There are two other rowing clubs in the town, Coleraine Academical Institution Boat Club and the University of Ulster Coleraine Rowing Club and Bann enjoys a friendly rivalry with both of these clubs.

In recent years the profile of rowing in Coleraine has reached levels hitherto unknown for any town, with the world class successes of Alan Campbell and Richard Chambers from Bann Rowing Club, rowing for Great Britain and Richard Archibald from Coleraine Academical Institution, rowing for Ireland. Bann is also very proud to have Richard Chamber’s younger brother Peter currently in line for Irish selection again after his success in 2007 rowing for Ireland at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Varese in Italy.

Bann Rowing Club welcomes anyone, male or female, young or not so young, with an interest in rowing who wishes to train and take part whether at Junior, Senior or Masters’ level. The Club participates at all three levels both on and off the water. Land based training forms a vital part of the preparation for competitive rowing and the Club promotes weight training, circuit training and indoor rowing in addition to a wide variety of water based training in all classes of boats on the river.
